With shorter days and cooler weather ahead comes the start of flu season. The flu, or influenza, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses that infect the nose, throat and lungs. Experts believe it is spread mainly by droplets created when people with the flu cough, sneeze or talk and droplets are dispersed, landing on others. The single best way to prevent the flu is to be vaccinated annually. Because it takes about two weeks for the antibodies to develop after a vaccination, it is best to get vaccinated early.
